Living with alpha-gal syndrome means learning a new way to stock your pantry — and let’s be honest, it can be overwhelming at first.
When I (Sundi Jo) was first diagnosed, I spent hours reading ingredient labels, trying to figure out what was safe. Over time, I found reliable, alpha-gal–friendly brands that made cooking simple again.
Here’s a list of my favorite kitchen staples I personally use and trust. Every product listed is free from mammalian ingredients and dairy, and each link makes it easy to order from Amazon or Walmart. Ingredients to Avoid or Double-Check
Even among “vegan” or “plant-based” foods, some ingredients can come from mammals. Watch out for:
- Gelatin, tallow, lard
- Whey, casein, collagen
- Glycerin or magnesium stearate (if animal-derived)
- Mono- and diglycerides
- “Natural flavors” (unless verified plant-based)
- Carrageenan (can cause issues for some)
Always contact the manufacturer if you’re unsure whether an ingredient contains alpha-gal.
How to Build an Alpha-Gal Safe Pantry
- Share your discoveries with the community to help others succeed.
- Start small — choose one section of your pantry to update.
- Replace dairy and mammal-based items gradually with safe alternatives.
- Keep a list of brands and products that work for you.
Building an alpha-gal safe kitchen takes patience, persistence, and a little creativity, but you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you’re just getting started or fine-tuning your pantry, every small step matters.
Surround yourself with community, stay curious about ingredients, and keep grace at the center of your journey.
