If you have ever stood in a grocery aisle, holding the same package, reading the label for the third time and still unsure if it is safe, this episode is for you. That moment is not you failing at this. Today we are making the invisible visible, so shopping stops feeling like a minefield.
Why Labels Are So Hard With Alpha-Gal
Alpha-gal isn’t a labeled allergen like peanuts or shellfish. So mammal-derived ingredients that can make us sick can hide under names that don’t say beef, pork, or dairy. On top of that, products change their formulas without notice. If label reading feels impossible right now, that is the system’s fault, not yours.
Alpha-Gal Hidden Ingredients to Know
You do not have to memorize these today. Just get familiar with the usual suspects:
- Gelatin. Animal collagen, usually mammal. Hides in gummy candy, marshmallows, some yogurts, capsules, and gelatin-clarified juices, wines, and beers.
- Glycerin (glycerol). Can be plant or animal-based, and the label rarely says which. Found in baked goods, protein bars, cough syrups, lotions.
- Magnesium stearate and stearic acid. Common pill and supplement fillers that can come from animal fat. This one blindsides people in their daily vitamin.
- Carrageenan. From seaweed, so not mammal-derived, but many alpha gals react to it anyway, especially early on.
- Natural flavors. The great mystery term. Can legally mean almost anything, including mammal sources. When unsure, contact the company or set it aside.
- Lard, tallow, rennet, whey, casein, mono- and diglycerides. The fats and dairy bits, hiding in cheese, bread, and packaged baked goods.
Sensitivity varies from person to person, so part of the early work is learning your own triggers, ideally with your provider. This is not medical advice. It is a flashlight.

A Tool That Makes Label Reading Easier
Reading every ingredient by hand, every time, is exhausting. An app called Fig takes a lot of that weight off. You build a profile set to your own sensitivity, scan a barcode in the store, and it comes back green, yellow, or red, then tells you why something is flagged.
Fig is free to get started, with a paid version for extras, and works on iPhone and Android. It is a co-pilot, not autopilot, so still glance at the label. More on how to use it: How the Fig App Helps With Alpha-Gal.
Beyond Food: Medications and Personal Care
It is not just food. Gelatin capsules, magnesium stearate, and glycerin show up in medications and supplements, and gummy vitamins are almost always gelatin-based. Never stop a medication on your own over an ingredient. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor, because there are usually alternatives.
Personal care is a layer too: soaps, lotions, makeup, and especially collagen products are often mammal-derived. Whether these affect you is individual, but if you are reacting and the food is not the culprit, it is worth a look.
It Gets Easier
Right now you are reading every label from scratch. But slowly you build your own safe list, and those trusted brands become your autopilot. That shift is the moment the grocery store stops being scary. It comes for everybody who sticks with it.
